This is a compilation of upcoming mask-required/universal masking events in the Northeast. The goal of this site is to promote safer and more accessible events that center wearing a mask -- one of our greatest tools for mitigating the spread of airborne diseases such as COVID-19. Please bookmark this page as it will be updated with any edits/additions throughout the month!

Please note: Fan-Club is not directly organizing these events. If you have any follow-up questions about a particular listing, please directly contact the organizer(s)! Attendees can also help shape what an event looks like through outreach and dialogue -— we all share responsibility for co-creating a safer space.

Lastly, Fan-Club uses platforms that actively divest from big tech. This is an intentional move on our part, though it may take a few more steps at times. We appreciate your support in sharing this list as well as the listserve, which will launch in November!!

what is yr criteria for listing an event?

  • mask-required events that take place in the Northeast "US,"
    • we're in Massachusetts, and are typically looking at "New England" (but also fuck borders and we might venture outside that for some stuff)
  • hybrid events (where the in-person aspect is both mask-required and geographically relevant)
  • PLUS some virtual events (should be geographically relevant)
we won't list events that promote or perpetuate racism, xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, or other forms of oppression. if you see something that we missed/should be removed, please don't hesitate to reach out.

note: you do not have the be the organizer or involved with an event to submit it! just try to include as much info as possible so we can add the listing without too much sleuthing to slow us down.

there is a piece of info missing from a listing, what the heck?

for listings that are not sent to us, we do our best to research venues and social media pages to get as much info as we can, especially regarding accessibility. when we can't find a specific piece of info, we exclude it altogether rather than guessing. if you have any information to share that we've missed, please contact us and we'll be sure to add it. we also intend to have organizers' contact info on each listing (not just their IG) so that folks can reach out directly with any follow-up questions and/or access needs. we hope this project will inspire event organizers to expand their COVID mitigations and other accessibility measures (and making that info easy to find is also a part of accessibility)!

are you on instagram? why does this site look like it's from 1997?

fan-listings is not on instagram, twitter/x, or any other corporate social media platforms. we intentionally host this site on Neocities, a non-AWS static website builder that uses zero tracking, data collection, cookies, etc. it is coded with just CSS and HTML. we respect the privacy of everyone using this resource, and do not want anyone who does not have an account on a particular app to miss out on this info. our listserve and email are hosted on RiseUp, another privacy-focused non-profit used by activists all over the world. the font on this site (unless yr browser doesn't enable it) is the Braille Institute's hyperlegible font, Atkinson. it's a free font and I can't recommend it enough. all images should have alt-text if they are embedded on the website (and optimized/condensed for low-bandwith/low-internet users). flyer jpg/png files that are linked do not have alt text, but the information has been extracted and put into the listing (maybe more capacity for this in the future, but we're a tiny team rn). the site itself is now more mobile-friendly, so should be easy to use on any screen size/device. if you are having trouble using the site and have ideas to make it more accessible, please reach out!!!

what are some resources you recommend for making an event safer from COVID and other airborne infectious diseases?

you can download the fan-club zine (a double-sided one-page flyer zine specifically about COVID-safer shows) here. that page also has a number of other zines about COVID/mitigations; all are free or donation-based and ready to be downloaded/printed.

fan-club also hosts workshops on COVID-Safer Shows, COVID-Safer Events, and FAR-UVC ("it's not magic, it's SCIENCE!"). you can sign up or learn more at http://fan-club.neocities.org/skillshares
you can borrow air purifiers, far-UVC lights, and CO2 monitors from fan-club as well, if you are close-ish to Boston/eastern MA. If you need masks, or are looking to borrow air purifiers etc outside of that area, check out COVID Action Map! there are many mask blocs and clean air orgs throughout the US and beyond looking to help.

how can I contact the fan-listings organizers?

we can be reached by email at fan-listings@riseup.net
